Tips, Tricks and Tools of the Trade
This week’s awesome guest speakers were Corianda Dimes (@corianda), Digital Manager at Golin Harris, and Andy Sternberg (@andysternberg), a digital media strategist and content specialist. Corianda and Andy shared with us their tips, tricks, and favorite tools of the trade.
Corianda let us in on a little secret. The secret was there is no such thing as a social media expert. She said like anything, you just have to practice your craft and hone your skills. In this case it’s about learning how to use the different social media platforms, and then finding the ones that work best for you and what you are trying to accomplish. She also pointed out that you shouldn’t forget the basics of a good marketing plan, such as defining goals, KPIs and metrics for success.
Andy shared with us some of his favorite tools and platforms such as Storify, If This Then That, Tweetdeck and several others, and then discussed what each can accomplish. Since I was new to many of these social media platforms, I was amazed to learn about their capabilities. I didn’t know that you could schedule a tweet, create a list in Twitter to follow just the people you want to see tweets from (this is awesome for people who follow a ton of people), and customize tweet searches.
The parting suggestion from Corianda and Andy was to read as much as you can and utilize an RSS service like Feedly.
