Debra Balamos

Debra Balamos

By UCLA X425 Student Debra Balamos

Last week at UCLA X425 I heard Clint Schaff (@clintschaff), VP and US general manager for digital marketing agency DARE, speak about social media trends and factors to consider when creating high-level strategic marketing campaigns.

Among the topics he discussed was what happens behind the scenes during “news-jacking” (or real-time marketing), which is not for the faint of heart or small budget. However, intriguing if you can seize the moment and engage a well-prepped team of onsite PR/marketing/social media /legal specialists to fire-out your real time, spontaneous messages. As it happens. Unplanned. Sort of. Continue reading

Mario Gonzalez

Mario Gonzalez

By UCLA X425 Student Mario Gonzalez

“Fuck you, pay me” – a quote from the movie Goodfellas – is what captured my attention when Jeremy Pepper (@jpepper) spoke in class. Jeremy is a social media strategist and blogger who has worked with Fortune 500 corporations such as Kodak, Clorox, Cisco and Verizon Wireless, to name a few. Jeremy began his blog about 10 years ago and continues to be an early adopter of social media intent on understanding how it works in the real world. Another term that caught my attention during his discussion was “TraDigital.” After Googling to find more information related to “TraDigital,” I found that it’s a new buzzword in public relations that defines the blending of traditional and digital public relations. The idea is not new, but it has now been coined with a new term. Continue reading

Week 4: A Conversation with Guest Speaker Tony Adam

Ran Aubrey Frazier

Ran Aubrey Frazier

By UCLA X425 Student Ran Aubrey Frazier

EventUp.com Founder and CEO Tony Adam offered some sage advice on improving a company’s digital visibility.
First and foremost, Adam suggested that a company learn to truly know its audience and think as they think. For example, people do not search for “automobiles” — they search for “cars.” Using inappropriate keywords undercuts your searchability. Google’s Keyword Planner is a current tool that Adam recommended. Continue reading

These include understanding your audience, creating a community, and reputation management. When discussing these areas of search engine optimization, Mr. Adam offered various strategies and tactics. This week’s speaker was Clint Schaff (@clintschaff), someone who’s clearly an expert at using social media to build higher market presence for his clients. Week 1: A Conversation with Guest Speaker Clint Schaff

Tanya DiggsBy UCLA X425 Student Tanya M. Diggs

I must admit I found Clint (@clintschaff) fascinating as he spoke about social media and its multitude of uses. Who owns social media is a perplexing question. One adage is that if there is no single owner, there is no one to take responsibility. Another perspective is that with everyone owning social media, it can serve many masters and objectives.
